Most Famous Wildfire Photograph Ever Taken!

Some consider this photo taken by a firefighter as the most beautiful photograph of a forest fire ever taken on a digital camera.

John McColgan, a BLM firefighter, took photos on August 6th, 2000 while fighting fires in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. McColgan says he "just happened to be in the right place at the right time" with his Kodak DC280 digital camera. McColgan could not be found for days after the one of those pictures spread like wildfire on the Internet.

The elk and fire snapshot has fast become the most downloaded environmental photo on the Internet. One About Forestry Forum member writes that the shot was "of the Bitterroot fires, south of Darby and taken (the shot) from a bridge over the Bitterroot River."

Charles Westmoreland, Texas forestry consultant, suggests that the photo "will probably be more famous than the Yellowstone Lodge fire picture." I have to agree.

SEPTEMBER 15, 2000 -- FAIRBANKS, ALASKA: For about a week now, there's been a medium-size manhunt under way across the West. The man everyone's been hunting for is John McColgan of Fairbanks.

McColgan hadn't done anything wrong, unless you count disappearing and not being easy to find. Dozens of people, from firefighters to web spooks to reporters, were hunting for the guy. McColgan was busy becoming a daddy, though, and not being very cooperative about being tracked down.

It all started with a fire, a camera, and a couple of cow elk. McColgan, a fire behavior analyst employed by the Alaska Fire Service, was working on the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana. It was Sunday, August 6, the day that several fires burned together near Sula into one 100,000-acre blaze. He was standing on a bridge over the East Fork of the Bitterroot River, and shot the photo with his Kodak DC280 digital camera.

Next thing he knew, the manhunt was on.

A jpg of the image was sent from one person to another person, and within about 24 hours the elk photo had world-wide-webbed its way across the West and wound up on the computer screens of dozens of people. Everyone wanted to know where it was taken and who took it.

How to Make Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs

I love hard boiled eggs. For years I ate one every morning until my doctor told me that you shouldn't eat the same food every single day. So now I eat them only a couple of times a week. Sometimes with a little salt, usually without. Used to be that people were scared of eating eggs because of the cholesterol in the egg yolks. Now research has found that eggs also raise the good cholesterol that bodies need. When it comes to boiling eggs, the biggest problem is that people can easily over-cook them, leading to a dark green color around the yolk, and a somewhat sulphuric taste. Here's a my method for cooking hard boiled eggs so that they don't get over-cooked:

1 First make sure that you are using eggs that are several days old. If this is Easter time, and everyone is buying their eggs at the last minute, buy your eggs 5 days in advance of boiling. (See the reference to using old eggs in Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking). Hard boiling farm fresh eggs will invariably lead to eggs that are difficult to peel. If you have boiled a batch that are difficult to peel, try putting them in the refrigerator for a few days; they should be easier to peel then.

2 Put the eggs in a single layer in a saucepan, covered by at least an inch of cold water. Starting with cold water and gently bringing the eggs to a boil will help keep them from cracking. Adding a tablespoon of vinegar to the water will help keep the egg whites from running out of any eggs that happen to crack while cooking, but some people find that the vinegar affects the taste. I don't have a problem with it and I usually add a little vinegar. Adding a half teaspoon of salt is thought to help both with the preventing of cracking and making the eggs easier to peel. Put the burner on high and bring the eggs to a boil. As soon as the water starts to boil, remove the pan from the heat for a few seconds.

3 Reduce the heat to low, return the pan to the burner. Let simmer for one minute. (Note I usually skip this step because I don't notice the eggs boiling until they've been boiling for at least a minute! Also, if you are using an electric stove with a coil element, you can just turn off the heat. There is enough residual heat in the coil to keep the eggs simmering for a minute.)

4 After a minute, remove the pan from the heat, cover, and let sit for 12 minutes. If you are doing a large batch of eggs, after 10 minutes you can check for doneness by sacrificing one egg, removing it with a slotted spoon, running it under cold water, and cutting it open. If it isn't done, cook the other eggs a minute or two longer. The eggs should be done perfectly at 10 minutes, but sometimes, depending on the shape of the pan, the size of the eggs, the number of eggs compared to the amount of water, and how cooked you like them, it can take a few minutes more. When you find the right time that works for you given your pan, the size of eggs you usually buy, the type of stove top you have, stick with it.

I also find that it is very hard to overcook eggs using this method. I can let the eggs sit, covered, for up to 15-20 minutes without the eggs getting overcooked.

5 Either remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and place them into a bowl of ice water (this is if you have a lot of eggs) OR strain out the water from the pan, fill the pan with cold water, strain again, fill again, until the eggs cool down a bit. Once cooled, strain the water from the eggs. Store the eggs in a covered container (eggs can release odors) in the refrigerator. They should be eaten within 5 days.

MARATHON, Fla. - A 75-pound stingray killed a Michigan woman Thursday when it flew out of the water and struck her face as she rode a boat in the Florida Keys, officials said.

Judy Kay Zagorski, of Pigeon, Mich., was sitting in the front seat of a boat going 25 mph when the spotted eagle ray, with a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet, leaped out of the water, said Jorge Pino, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The 57-year-old woman's father was driving the boat on the Atlantic Ocean side of Vaca Key, Pino said.

"He had absolutely no warning. It just happened instantaneously," Pino said.

The collision knocked Zagorski backward onto the floor of the boat, Pino said.

The impact likely killed the woman, and she did not appear to have puncture wounds from the ray's barb, Pino said. An autopsy is planned, Pino said.

Zagorski's sister was standing next to her when the stingray appeared but was not injured, Pino said.

The stingray died from the impact, officials said.

Spotted eagle rays can weigh 500 pounds and have a wingspan of up to 10 feet. They are known to occasionally jump out of the water but are not aggressive and use the venomous barb at the end of their tail for defense.

The rays are protected in Florida waters and are typically seen swimming on the water's surface.

"Rays jump to escape a predator, give birth and shake off parasites," said Lynn Gear, supervisor of fishes and reptiles at Theater of the Sea in Islamorada. "They do not attack people."

In 2006, a South Florida man was also critically injured when a stingray flopped into his boat and stung him. James Bertakis, 82, of Lighthouse Point, underwent surgery because the stingray left a foot-long barb in his heart. He has since recovered.

The Symbionese Liberation Army began in the fall of 1973 when no more than a dozen white, college-educated children of middle-class families adopted a seven-headed snake as their symbol, a black ex-convict as their leader, and the phrase, "Death to the fascist insect that preys upon the life of the people'' as their slogan.

The violent group derived its name from the word "symbiosis,'' a biological term referring to unlike organisms coexisting harmoniously for mutual benefit.

Some dates in the history of the SLA:

Nov. 6, 1973: The SLA issues a "communique'' claiming responsibility for the murder of Oakland Schools Superintendent Marcus Foster, a black man, because he supposedly favored a police plan for students to carry identification. Joseph Remiro is serving a life sentence for helping shoot Foster.

Feb. 4, 1974: SLA kidnaps 19-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst from her Berkeley, Calif., apartment.

April 15, 1974: After weeks locked in a closet, Hearst joins the SLA, begins calling herself "Tania,'' after the girlfriend of Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara, and is photographed holding a rifle during a robbery of the Hibernia Bank branch in San Francisco.

May 17, 1974: Six heavily armed members of the SLA, including leader Donald DeFreeze, die in a shootout and fire that consumes their Los Angeles hideout. Hearst and Bill and Emily Harris escape because they had been stopped at a store for shoplifting. The Harrises eventually serve eight years in prison for the Hearst kidnapping.

Human Resources Management

The Human Resources Management (HRM) function includes a variety of activities, and key among them is deciding what staffing needs you have and whether to use independent contractors or hire employees to fill these needs, recruiting and training the best employees, ensuring they are high performers, dealing with performance issues, and ensuring your personnel and management practices conform to various regulations. Activities also include managing your approach to employee benefits and compensation, employee records and personnel policies. Usually small businesses (for-profit or nonprofit) have to carry out these activities themselves because they can't yet afford part- or full-time help. However, they should always ensure that employees have -- and are aware of -- personnel policies which conform to current regulations. These policies are often in the form of employee manuals, which all employees have.

Note that some people distinguish a difference between between HRM (a major management activity) and HRD (Human Resource Development, a profession). Those people might include HRM in HRD, explaining that HRD includes the broader range of activities to develop personnel inside of organizations, including, eg, career development, training, organization development, etc.

There is a long-standing argument about where HR-related functions should be organized into large organizations, eg, "should HR be in the Organization Development department or the other way around?"

The HRM function and HRD profession have undergone tremendous change over the past 20-30 years. Many years ago, large organizations looked to the "Personnel Department," mostly to manage the paperwork around hiring and paying people. Gilchrist's greatest contribution was the way he changed how the world looked at wicketkeepers

One of my first memories of Adam Gilchrist is of his counterattacking century against Pakistan in Hobart in 1999, which in partnership with Justin Langer helped Australia chase down 369 from 124 for 5. Another innings I fondly remember is the double-century he scored against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2001-02. When he came in, the second new ball had been taken. I remember the commentators saying that he didn't much like to face the new ball - but in two hours he had a double-century.

Those were the kind of innings that proved a wicketkeeper batting lower down the order could be the most important member of the side when it came to sealing and winning games. You could have imagined something of that sort in ODIs, but he was doing it in Test cricket, where no one had seen a No. 7 quite like that, coming in and murdering attacks and then going behind the stumps to do a wonderful job.

That is what Adam meant to international cricket: he completely changed the way we looked at wicketkeepers. After his ascent, specialist wicketkeepers started taking a back seat and wicketkeepers who could contribute big runs with the bat came into prominence. He put a lot of pressure on other teams to unearth players who would become genuine wicketkeeping allrounders.

That his wicketkeeping was often overlooked is a compliment to his batting, and more importantly to his wicketkeeping. When your wicketkeeping is being noticed, there is normally a problem. Adam was an excellent wicketkeeper - maybe not in the same bracket as Ian Healy, but definitely one of the best going around in world cricket today. It would have been very difficult for him to step into Healy's shoes, but it was clear from the start that he was not trying to be another Healy; he was himself. Just as I have to keep to Murali, he had Shane Warne to keep to. When you have such great spinners in your side, it puts your keeping under scrutiny. You have to raise your keeping skills to match those of the bowlers you are keeping to. If you look at Adam's career, he has been consistently good, and that's exactly what you look for in a wicketkeeper.

He was exactly the shot in the arm Australian cricket needed at the time: an explosive batsman who held his own with his wicketkeeping and did more than that with his batting. They could be 150 for 5, and then end up with 400-plus, with Adam batting in the company of tailenders and getting big runs.

There was a time when bowlers around the world developed the strategy of bowling at him from around the stumps. Andrew Flintoff had a fair amount of success with that, and a few left-arm bowlers were reasonably successful too, but then again, over the last year or so Adam has adapted to that by changing his guard, going from perhaps middle stump to off stump and giving the bowler less of an angle to work with.

With Adam's style of play, bowlers knew they were always in with a chance. The odd chance would come, but if the fielding side failed to grab it, the next half an hour could cost 50 or 60 runs. He was unpredictable and explosive, and bowlers naturally hate bowling to such batsmen. No matter how well you bowled, it didn't matter when he was on song. Bowlers would probably start off thinking it might be a tough day, but the thing was, they stayed interested too. Anything could happen when he batted. When he did score, he scored at a rate that took the game away before sides knew it. His batting has been fantastic for the game, as he attracted a lot of spectators. A lot of people who had come to regard Test cricket as boring changed their mind when they watched Adam bat.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A teenage boy is accused of fatally shooting his mother and her two little girls, one of whom was the 4-year-old daughter of rap star Juvenile.

Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr., 17, was charged Friday with murder in the deaths at the family home near Lawrenceville, where the bodies were found the night before, said police spokeswoman Illana Spellman.

She identified the victims as Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Joy Deleston, 39, and her two daughters, Micaiah, 11, and Jelani, 4. The motive was still unclear.

Deleston brought a paternity suit in 2004, claiming that the 32-year-old rap star Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray, was Jelani's father, Gwinnett County court records show.

Attorney Randy Kessler, who represented Juvenile in the proceedings, said the case was resolved peacefully by consent order in 2006. Both parties agreed Juvenile was the father.

Terrell was taken to jail in neighboring DeKalb County to avoid any potential conflict because Deleston worked for Gwinnett County, Spellman said. He is being held without bail.

Because of his age, prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty against Terrell. A preliminary hearing will be set next week in Gwinnett County Superior Court, said prosecutor Danny Porter.

Defense attorney Lyle Porter did not return a call Friday, and a number was not immediately available for Juvenile or a spokesperson.

Authorities on Friday found the gun used, going by information provided by Terrell. Spellman said she could not confirm whether Deleston's service weapon was used.

Deleston, a seven-year member of the department, had been assigned to the sex offender unit, officials said.

Police had gone to the subdivision because a caller reported shots fired, Officer David Schiralli said earlier. They found a bullet hole in a house, then checked next door because they knew a deputy lived there.

"There was no answer, but lights were on," Schiralli said. "They opened the door a little bit to announce themselves," then discovered the bodies, he said.

The 17-year-old son arrived at the house about 35 minutes later, he said. Spellman said he was arrested after talking to investigators but didn't elaborate.

Neighbors said the family had moved in less than a year ago. They often saw Deleston in her squad car coming home from work and said having a deputy around was reassuring.

Jeff Beaird, who lives across the street, said he often saw Terrell in the driveway shooting hoops with his friends or washing his mother's patrol car but doesn't remember anything out of the ordinary.

"It's so shocking because you don't expect something like this to happen," Beaird said.

On a London stage in October 1998, the four members of Athens band Neutral Milk Hotel played their last show together. For nearly a year, they'd been on a grueling tour to support In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, an album that had become the darling of music critics across the country.

"Band members swap instruments like they're hot potatoes, changing from marching band ensemble to noise-punk quartet at the drop of a flugelhorn."

And Aeroplane resonated with fans -- especially fans sick of the Nirvana knockoffs and Lilith Fair alums jamming up "alternative" radio stations in 1998. From city to city, they crowded into smoky clubs with low ceilings, like pilgrims gathering before 19th-century evangelists. Even Rolling Stone caught on, declaring Neutral Milk Hotel the creative pinnacle of a collective of Athens musicians called Elephant 6.

At the center of all this was Jeff Mangum -- Louisiana native, Athens transplant, chief visionary for Neutral Milk Hotel and acknowledged savant of Elephant 6. Although Aeroplane was a Neutral Milk Hotel album, it was Mangum who conceived of it, who wrote the songs, who channeled the sounds in his head onto acetate. Drummer Jeremy Barnes knew this as the band left the stage that night in London. Sure, the tour may have ended, but with Mangum leading the way, the band's march toward coronation as underground rock royalty seemed assured. That night, says Barnes, "we were completely united."

Air Force official may have tipped company to bid of rival Airbus

WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon has launched a formal investigation to determine whether a former Air Force official broke the law by passing information to The Boeing Co. about a rival's bid for a $21 billion contract to lease aerial tankers.

Air Force Secretary James Roche confirmed that the Pentagon's inspector general is conducting a formal investigation into the actions of Darleen Druyun, who as deputy assistant Air Force secretary for acquisition and management was a central figure in Boeing's successful effort to win the contract.

Druyun retired from the Air Force in late 2002 and now works for Boeing as a senior official in the company's missile defense systems.

"It's my understanding that the investigation is going forward, yes," Roche said in a brief interview with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He declined to elaborate.

At the center of the allegation is an April 1, 2002, e-mail from Boeing Vice President Andrew Ellis to other senior Boeing officials updating them on the status of the tanker negotiations with the Air Force. Among the points listed by Ellis was that "Darleen told us several times to keep in mind" that the price per plane offered by Boeing's rival, Airbus, was $5 million to $17 million "cheaper" than the Boeing 767 bid.

Boeing denied that any violation occurred, pointing out that pricing information on planes is widely available and that the timing of Druyun's information came after Boeing's tanker bid had been selected by the Air Force.

While Boeing had indeed beaten out Airbus for the project at the time of the April e-mail, it would be more than a year before Boeing and the Air Force agreed to a final price.

The investigation will seek to determine whether Druyun violated conflict-of-interest laws or trade-secret protections by telling Boeing the price of aircraft in the Airbus bid.

"Boeing believes that we received no proprietary information from any official at any time on any subject throughout the entire tanker process," company spokesman Doug Kennett said.

If the investigation does determine that a violation took place, however, it could be another major blow to Boeing. The Air Force canceled more than $1 billion in contracts with Boeing to launch rockets after it was determined that the company improperly obtained thousands of sensitive documents belonging to rival Lockheed Martin.

Confirmation of the investigation came one day before a Senate committee plans to consider the lease that the Air Force says is essential to maintaining the nation's war-fighting capability, but which critics say is little more than a bailout to Boeing. The critics say the deal is $6 billion more expensive than buying the planes outright.

Critics hoped that the questions would cause the Senate Armed Services Committee to delay approving the lease today. That committee is the last of four that has to endorse the deal before it becomes final.

In a Commerce Committee hearing yesterday, the deal's chief opponent, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., spent three hours grilling Roche about the tanker contract. McCain paid particular attention to why the Air Force did not consider alternatives to leasing 100 767 tankers as is common with major defense projects.

He also suggested that the Air Force and Boeing worked as a team to sell the deal rather than as adversaries that would bring the lowest price.

"From the beginning, the Air Force appeared not so much to negotiate with Boeing as to advocate for it, to the point of appearing to allow the company too much control not only over pricing and the terms and conditions of the contract, but perhaps also the aircraft's capabilities," McCain said.

McCain cited one estimate provided to the Air Force by an independent consulting firm that concluded that the price of each plane should be between $59 million and $95 million. Under the lease, the Air Force agreed to pay Boeing $131 million for each plane. That number jumps to $161 million per plane when interest costs are added along with the cost of buying the planes at the end of the six-year lease.

Roche countered that the Air Force and other federal agencies closely scrutinized the deal and that the government got a good price. The planes are desperately needed, Roche said, because the planes the 767 will replace average 43 years old and cost more than $5 billion a year to maintain.

"We do not propose leasing tankers as a bailout for Boeing or any other aircraft manufacturer," Roche told the committee. "We propose leasing tankers because we need tankers to fight our nation's wars, and we do not believe we should take the risk to wait for years before we begin."

Roche also said it was too early to know whether Druyun violated any law.

"The use of specific numbers well may not have been appropriate," he replied. "And if it is proprietary information, it was absolutely inappropriate and that's being looked into."

Although the Commerce Committee was considered hostile territory for Boeing and the tanker proposal, the company and its project were not without allies.

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said the new tankers are needed to update an aging fleet and to provide jobs for Boeing workers who have been hit hard since Sept. 11. The planes would be built at Boeing's plant in Everett.

"We cannot afford to ignore the need to modernize our tanker fleet -- unlike other planes in our arsenal, there is simply no replacement to tankers. Put simply, without a modern tanker fleet, our nation's air power could be crippled," Cantwell said.

Cantwell was joined by Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, who said the idea to lease the planes was his as a way to get the planes at a time when there is not enough money to buy them.

"I just do not understand why we should put people to fly planes in combat that were made before their grandfathers were in the military," Stevens said.

The tanker contest pitted Northrop's larger, more capable KC-30 against Boeing's smaller, more agile KC-767. Los Angeles-based Northrop plans to assemble its tankers in Mobile, AL, creating up to 1,500 jobs in a new factory at the Brookley Field Industrial Complex. Airbus, an EADS subsidiary, has announced plans to add another 300 jobs by shifting production of a commercial air freighter to Brookley.

The tanker announcement is the second major economic development project for Mobile County in the past year.

What is a leap year?

A leap year is a year in which one extra day has been inserted, or intercalated, at the end of February. A leap year consists of 366 days, whereas other years, called common years, have 365 days.

Which years are leap years?

In the Gregorian calendar, the calendar used by most modern countries, the following three criteria determine which years will be leap years:

Every year that is divisible by four is a leap year;
of those years, if it can be divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless
the year is divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

According to the above criteria, that means that years 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and 2500 are NOT leap years, while year 2000 and 2400 are leap years.

The vernal equinox is the time when the sun is directly above the Earth's equator, moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere.

The mean time between two successive vernal equinoxes is called a tropical year–also known as a solar year–and is about 365.2422 days long.

Using a calendar with 365 days every year would result in a loss of 0.2422 days, or almost six hours per year. After 100 years, this calendar would be more than 24 days ahead of the season (tropical year), which is not desirable or accurate. It is desirable to align the calendar with the seasons and to make any difference as insignificant as possible.

By adding a leap year approximately every fourth year, the difference between the calendar and the seasons can be reduced significantly, and the calendar will align with the seasons much more accurately.

(The term "day" is used to mean "solar day"–which is the mean time between two transits of the sun across the meridian of the observer.)

Is there a perfect calendar?

No calendars used today are perfect; they are off by seconds, minutes, hours or days every year. To make a calendar more accurate, new leap year rules have to be introduced to the Gregorian calendar, complicating the calculation of the calendar even more. It will, however, need some modifications in a few thousand years. As for the tropical year, it is approximately 365.242199 days, but varies from year to year because of the influence of other planets.

Barbara Graham Biography

Barbara Graham was born on June 26, 1923 in Oakland, California. After being born, her mother (who was a teenager), was sent to reform school. As a result, Barbara was raised by strangers and never saw her mother.

As a teenager, Barbara was reportedly promiscuous and got arrested on numerous occasions. Eventually, she was sentenced to serve time at the same reform school that her mother had been to. After being released, she got married and started taking classes at a business school. Things seemed to be going well and she even had a child, but in 1941 her husband divorced her. OVer the next several years, she was married two more times and had a second child, but each of these attempts at a normal life failed.

After this string of failures, Barbara became a prostitute, working for San Francisco's Sally Stanford. Barbara was soon involved in drugs and gambling and had a number of friends who were ex-convicts and career criminals. In 1953, she married a man named Henry Graham, with whom she had a third child named Tommy.

Henry Graham was not an upstanding citizen, but rather a hardened criminal. Through him, she met his criminal friends Jack Santo and Emmet Perkins. Barbara and Perkins started an affair and he told her about a woman named Mabel Monahan, who supposedly kept large quantities of jewels and cash in her home.

In March of 1953, Barbara joined Perkins and Santo, as well as John True and Baxter Shorter (two of their criminal friends), in robbing the Monahan home. Barbara reportedly asked the elderly widow if she could use the phone and, after the door was opened, the rest of the criminals burst in. After getting inside, the gang demanded the money and the jewels, but the old lady refused to give them anything.

At this point, Barbara reportedly pistol whipped the old woman, cracking her skull, and then suffocated her with a pillow. The robbery ended up being a bust since there were no jewels in the house and the gang left empty handed. Eventually, some of the gang members were arrested and John True agreed to become a state witness in exchange for immunity.

In court, True acted as a witness against Barbara, who continually protested her innocence. The press nicknamed her "Bloody Babs", reflecting the public's disdain for her actions. She reportedly had good chances of getting acquitted, but she slipped up by offering another inmate $25,000 to provide an alibi. The inmate, however, was an undercover policewoman who recorded the conversation. After the tapes were played in court, Barbara was easily convicted.

Barbara, Santo, and Perkins were all sentenced to death for the robbery and murder. Barbara appealed the sentence, while serving time at the California Institute for Women in the city of Corona. Her appeals all failed and she was transferred to San Quentin for death row and eventual execution. On June 3, 1955, she was scheduled to be executed at 10:00 AM, but was stayed until 10:45 AM. At 10:43 AM, it was stayed again until 11:30 AM and a weary Barbara protested, "Why do they torture me? I was ready to go at 10:00."

At 11:28 AM, she was led from her cell to be strapped in the gas chamber. There, she requested a blindfold so she wouldn't have to look at anyone observing. The execution was carried out and her last words were "Good people are always so sure they're right."

Barbara Graham's guilt has been debated and she was the subject of the 1958 film "I Want to Live!", starring Susan Hayward. However, most of the evidence points to her guilt and there has yet to be any conclusive evidence that says otherwise.

Barbara Graham was born in 1923 in Oakland California. She had a difficult and miserable childhood (a familiar story?) Her mother was sent to a reformatory when she was only 2 years old and thus Barbara was raised by neighbours and got little education.

As a teenager she was promiscuous and in trouble with the law. She was sent to the reformatory where her mother had also been an inmate. She was released in 1939 and tried to make a new start for herself. She got married and enrolled in a business college and soon had her first child. The marriage was not a success and by 1941 she was divorced.
Barbara liked nice things and also, perhaps surprisingly was said to enjoy classical music, but she also liked gambling and drugs.
She was jailed for two months in San Diego for "lewd and disorderly conduct". She married again but this marriage lasted only a few months. In 1944 she served a jail term for prostitution. Her friends were mainly criminals who were involved in prostitution and gambling.
Life was steadily going down hill for Barbara - she had a job as a waitress in a cocktail bar but soon went back to prostitution to earn a living. In another attempt to live a decent life she worked for a while as a nurse in Nevada. She married for the third time in 1951 but this didn't last and in 1953 she met and married Henry Graham. She had a another child by Graham, her third, a boy called Tommy, who was two years old at the time of his mother's execution.
Graham involved Barbara with his criminal friends. She met Emmet Perkins and Jack Santo through her husband. They were involved in various nefarious activities.
She had an affair with Perkins and agreed to help him rob an elderly widow called Mrs. Mabel Monahan who was thought to keep large sums of money and jewellery in her house. Perkins, Santo, Barbara and a fourth gang member called John True went to the old lady's house and demanded she hand it over to them. She either wouldn't or couldn't. So according to True, Barbara lost patience and began to pistol whip the old lady and then suffocated her with a pillow.
Barbara, Perkins and Santo were soon arrested. True gave evidence against them in return for immunity from prosecution and they were all three convicted and sentenced to death.
There is much disagreement as to whether Barbara was innocent or guilty or partially guilty by virtue of being involved in the murder. She did herself no favours in prison on remand by trying to bribe a fellow "inmate" to give her an alibi. The inmate was a "plant" - a police women. Barbara also tried to bribe another policeman to say she was with him on the night of the murder. This destroyed her credibility in court. When questioned about this at the trail she said "Oh, have you ever been desperate? Do you know what it means not to know what to do"

Inevitably the jury found all three guilty and they were sentenced to death.

Barbara was sent to the California Institute for Women at Corona from where she would be driven to St. Quentin to spend her final hours. The California state gas chamber is housed within St. Quentin and is a steel capsule painted pale green and containing two perforated metal chairs for the condemned.

Her execution was originally scheduled for 10.00 a.m. on the 3rd of June 1955. She prepared herself and dressed in a beige wool suit and brown pumps. Her initial execution time was stayed until 10.45. At 10.43 she was being prepared when a second stay was granted - this time until 11.30 a.m. Barbara was very upset by these stays - she had prepared herself and could not understand "why do they torture me? I was ready to go at 10.00" At 11.28 a.m. the execution finally got under way. Barbara was led from the holding cell blindfolded and strapped into one of the two chairs in the gas chamber. She had requested the blindfold so she wouldn't have to see the witnesses. "In a situation like this you don't moan, you don't beg you don't plead - you try to be a woman" she was quoted as saying .Joe Feretti was in charge of Barbara's execution and it was his job to strap her into the chair. Once she was secure he said to her "Now take a deep breath and it won't bother you" to which Barbara retorted "How in the hell would you know?". She died easily unlike some gas chamber victims. Later that day the two men were executed.

Barbara got lots of media attention and was dubbed "Bloody Babs" by the press. Whether she was really was we will never know.
She never showed any remorse for the old lady's death and was hardly most peoples' idea of a "nice girl" but many still believe she was framed for a crime which she didn't commit.
Two films were made about her both called "I want to live". One starred Susan Hayward (see picture) and the other starred Lindsey Wagner and both are very moving. Interestingly when Barbara was interviewed on death row she told the reporter "If I have to spend the rest of my life in prison - if I have to serve more than seven years - I want it the way it is. I'll take the gas chamber. Maybe that will be better for my kids" (of which she had three).
Barbara described herself as "paying for a life of little sins". Only one more woman was to go to California's gas chamber (Elizabeth Ann Duncan in 1962). Barbara was the third woman to be executed in California this century and one of nine prisoners to go to the gas chamber there in 1955.

In Britain 6 weeks later another attractive young mother was executed amongst similar media attention - Ruth Ellis.

Conclusion.
Barbara's case is yet another of those difficult cases of what in Britain was known as common purpose. A group of people go out to commit a crime (a serious crime in this case) and as a result their victim is brutally murdered.
All individually deny their guilt and blame the others but who is telling the truth? It may well be that Barbara did not pistol whip and suffocate Mrs. Mahon but one or more of the group did. Should we deem them all to be guilty and thus give them the same sentence, as they were all present and involved with the crime? The law in most countries has always argued that we should.
Remember two of the men involved also went to the gas chamber on the same day as Barbara for their part in the crime.
Had Barbara not been an attractive woman and a young mother the case would have been soon forgotten, as she was, there was intense media and therefore public interest in her fate. Opinions tend to become polarised and to this day there are those who maintain her innocence.

Common purpose has always made hard law but what is the answer? It is often impossible to say who struck the fatal blow - should the court therefore not convict any of them for murder or should it convict all of them?

Very few of the respondents to my survey feel that women should be treated more leniently in respect of the death penalty and it is difficult to see in the pursuit of justice any sensible reason why they should be, at least in theory. And yet there is a natural repugnance at the execution of (attractive) women. It is notable that there was huge interest in and protests over the execution of Karla Faye Tucker in Texas in 1998 who was attractive whilst hardly any interest in the execution of Judias Beunoano a month later who was 54 and unattractive. But that is the way of the world it seems.

Kajukenbo was founded in 1947 at Palamas Settlement on Oahu, Hawaii. It developed out a group calling themselves the "Black Belt Society", which consisted of black belts from various martial arts backgrounds who met to train and learn with each other. This was the beginning of an evolutionary, adaptive style designed to combine the most useful aspects of the arts.

There are five men credited as founders of Kajukenbo, and it is from their respective arts that Kajukenbo draws it's name.

Philosophical Meaning of Kajukenbo: "Through this fist style one gains long life and happiness."

Kenpo emerged as the core around which this new art was built. Although uncreditted by name, other influences included American Boxing (Choo was Hawaiian Welterweight Champion) and Escrima (Emperado also studied Kali and Arnis Escrima).

In the late 1940's, Palamas Settlement was a violent area and fist-fights or stabbings were commonplace. From this environment, the founders of Kajukenbo wanted to develop an art that would be readily usefull on the street. As they trained and fought in and around Palamas Settlement, the founders of Kajukenbo quickly gained reputations as formidable street-fighters. In 1950, Adriano Emperado, along with brother Joe Emperado, began teaching the new art in an open class. They called the school Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute (K.S.D.I.).

The emphasis during training was on realism - so much so that students routinely broke bones, fainted from exhaustion, or were knocked unconcious. Nevertheless, the reputation of this tough new art drew more students and Emperado opened a second school at the nearby Kaimuki YMCA. Soon Emperado had 12 Kajukenbo schools in Hawaii, making it the second largest string of schools at the time. John Leoning, who earned a black belt from Emperado, brought Kajukenbo to the mainland in 1958. Since that time, Kajukenbo has continued to flourish and grow.

From it's beginnings, Kajukenbo was an ecclectic and adaptive art. As time has passed, Kajukenbo has continued to change and evolve. Currently, there are a few distinct, "recognized" branches of Kajukenbo: Kenpo ("Emperado Method" or "Traditional Hard Style"), Tum Pai, Chu'an Fa, Wun Hop Kuen Do, and Gaylord Method. In addition, there are numerous "unrecognized" branches, including CHA-3 and Kenkabo. While this may be confusing for an outsider, it is the essence of the art. Students are not required to mimic the teacher, but are encouraged to develop their own "expression" of the art.

How did you get involved in your company?

The company grew out research we did on women in their daily life. While women were working more than ever before and earning more than ever before, women had more and more responsibilities both at work and at home and were completely out of time. It was that time-stress element that we saw as a real opportunity for trying to build a business that served women's needs and help make their life a little easier.

We're a membership organization by women for women that's dedicated to helping women save time and money. We do the comparison shopping and legwork for important products and services that women don't really have the time to do themselves anymore. Right now, we have 35 products but we're always adding to our product mix. We listen to our members and figure out what kind of services they need help finding. We have 40,000 women nationwide who have responded to our offers so far. Because of our Web site being up, we're actually hearing from a lot of women from other countries who are interested in franchising this idea. We've heard from a number of women in Canada, England and Japan. There's no other program like this in other countries.

What can the government do to bring more women's voices into the economic agenda?

One of the next movements for women is the movement of their economic clout. Women do 85 percent of the shopping in America; we buy 50 percent of all the cars; we spend 81 cents of ever dollar in a grocery store; we make 74 percent of the health care decisions in our family.

Women spend so much money in this country. We make about a trillion dollars, but we spend 3.5 trillion dollars. That's real economic clout. We need to help women assert their power and use that to get good deals as well as have products designed for them. The power of women in the marketplace is extraordinary. At Women's Consumer Network, we're trying to increase their clout and level the playing field. They spend a lot of money, but many products and services are targeted toward men, not women. We'd like to flex women's economic muscle.

What are you doing to promote and encourage the success and advancement of women in business?

A lot of women are starting their own companies or working part-time. These women rarely have access to benefits. We are making it easier for them to have access to good products and services. We have a vision plan, we have a dental plan, and we have access to good financial information. Professor Moss’s research focuses on the problem of Alzheimer’s disease. One hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease is the senile plaques that accumulate in the brain where they are associated with neuronal loss and in the cerebrovasculature where they may perpetuate stoke. These plaques are composed primarily of the amyloid b-protein (Ab). Ab self-assembles into fibrils that deposit to yield plaques. Consequently, inhibition of Ab self-assembly has emerged as one therapeutic approach for Alzheimer’s disease. The focus of our research is to understand this self-assembly process, to describe it kinetically, and to characterize inhibitors that may target specific stages of Ab assembly. We utilize many biophysical techniques including chromatography, fluorescence spectroscopy, static and dynamic light scattering, and atomic force microscopy. Furthermore, we seek to determine how various Ab self-assembly processes affect both neuronal and vascular cells. In particular, Ab accumulation in the cerebrovasculature is associated with an increase in immune cell recruitment. We are interested in understanding how interactions between Ab and endothelial cells, which line the cerebrovasculature, contribute to an increased adhesion of immune cells to the cerebrovascular endothelium. Correlating the mechanism of action of inhibitors with cellular effects will assist research efforts to design effective therapeutic agents for Alzheimer’s disease therapy.

Derivation Of The Name Castor

It is interesting to trace the origin of the name "castor." Castor is the generic name of the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) and one of the brightest double stars in the constellation Gemini. In Greek and Roman legend, Castor was one of the twin sons of Jupiter and Leda. According to E. A. Weiss, writing in Castor, Sesame and Safflower (1971), the name "castor" has nothing to do with beavers, luminous stars, or offspring of Greek and Roman Gods. Castor was apparently coined by English traders who confused it with the oil of another shrub, Vitex agnus-castus, which the Spanish and Portuguese in Jamaica called "agno-casto." Although it is commonly known as the castor bean plant, the seed is really not a true bean and it is not related to the Bean or Legume Family (Fabaceae). There are many other examples of "beans" that are technically not beans, such as Mexican Jumping "beans" and coffee "beans."

The scientific name for the castor plant, Ricinus communis, has a much more logical derivation. Communis means common in Latin, and castor plants were already commonly naturalized in many parts of the world when the eighteenth century Swedish naturalist Carolus Linnaeus (Karl von Linné) was giving scientific first and last names to plants and animals over 200 years ago. Ricinus is the Latin word for tick and is the specific epithet for the Mediterranean sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus). Apparently Linnaeus thought the seeds looked like ticks, particularly large ticks engorged with blood.

A western wood tick (Dermacentor occidentalis). The mottled body of certain ticks superficially resembles a castor bean seed (especially when the tick is engorged with blood), and the tick's head resembles the caruncle of a castor bean seed.

Sadie Hawkins Day, an American folk event, made its debut in Al Capp's Li'l Abner strip November 15, 1937. Sadie Hawkins was "the homeliest gal in the hills" who grew tired of waiting for the fellows to come a courtin'. Her father, Hekzebiah Hawkins, a prominent resident of Dogpatch, was even more worried about Sadie living at home for the rest of his life, so he decreed the first annual Sadie Hawkins Day, a foot race in which the unmarried gals pursued the town's bachelors, with matrimony the consequence. By the late 1930's the event had swept the nation and had a life of its own. Life magazine reported over 200 colleges holding Sadie Hawkins Day events in 1939, only two years after its inception. It became a woman empowering rite at high schools and college campuses, long before the modern feminist movement gained prominence. The basis of Sadie Hawkins Day is that women and girls take the initiative in inviting the man or boy of their choice out on a date, typically to a dance attended by other bachelors and their aggressive dates. When Al Capp created the event, it was not his intention to have the event occur annually on a specific date because it inhibited his freewheeling plotting. However, due to its enormous popularity and the numerous fan letters Capp received, the event became an annual event in the strip during the month of November, lasting four decades.

Carmen Kontur Gronquist, who is also the fire department’s executive secretary, said the photos were taken before she was elected mayor three years ago, and she saw no reason to remove them from the Internet after taking office.

February 26, 2008 - I feel like I hear this all the time, but first-person shooters really are a dime a dozen these days, especially on PC which has always been the true home for FPS titles. With so many similar products vying for attention it certainly takes a special gaming experience to impress the masses. Call of Duty 4 was able to do it, BioShock certainly pulled it off, and now it's Frontlines: Fuel of War trying to make its mark on sales charts. It's a game rooted in present day headlines as the world is being torn apart by warring nations competing for the coveted oil that has been the bane of our existence here in reality for far too long. While the timeframe for Fuel of War is set a bit in the future, the issues that it tackles certainly hit home. Now the only question is if the gameplay can do the same.

Those who have played past Battlefield titles will feel right at home with Frontlines' core gameplay mechanic. Essentially the maps are riddled with predetermined capture points. As you steal them from the enemy you advance the frontline of the battle more and more until you eventually own the map. Some points require you to stand next to a satellite for a certain amount of time; others have you planting C4 to take down an enemy installation, but working through each of the missions never quite feels like an engrossing campaign. Instead, it feels too much like a series of bot matches. Not to say that there isn't plenty of intense moments throughout the roughly 6-8 hour (three difficulty levels extend it a bit) set of missions, it just doesn't feel as natural as other games on the market.

The war that rages on throughout Frontlines is between the Western Coalition Army (United States and European Union) and the Red Star Alliance (Russia and China) with the bulk of the action happening throughout the Middle East. The cutscenes which bookend each mission are delivered from the perspective of an embedded journalist reporting on the war. While you don't have a defined squad with character names and specific personalities you still get to hear inspirational speeches and be a part of other moments of reasonably effective drama, but it never reaches the bar that has been set by others.

The real issue with the single-player gameplay isn't its storytelling, after all Frontlines isn't supposed to be a story-driven FPS, but instead the main problem is its lack of originality. If we had seen this game released a year ago we'd be singing a different tune as there are moments when you're repelling a massive enemy force across a monstrous battlefield that you can't help but define as "cool" but it doesn't separate itself enough from the shadow of the giants of our industry to cross the void from being a "good" to a "great" solo experience.

It's like a little TV.

Luckily for Fuel of War the main attraction isn't its campaign. The real hook, the reason why there are going to be people playing Frontlines for quite some time, is its 64-player multiplayer. If you can manage to find a massive group of friends and have a solid connection at your disposal then there's the potential for a great online experience. With planes, helicopters, tanks, and the myriad of drones and devices doing battle at one time on a few of the massive landscapes the action is undeniably fun and fast paced.
